Bummed about Chuck, Jake Shields will be happy soon

Jake Shields is on top of negotiations (Esther Lin/Strikeforce)

Jake Shields was ringside to see his good friend Chuck Liddell fight at UFC 115.

Shields  saw what everyone else saw: a determined Liddel trying to defy the critics who written him off, showing glimpses of versatility with kicks and takedowns.

Then Chuck got caught and was knocked out for the third time in four fights.

“I was bummed out,” Shields told the Ground & Pound’s Hector Castro and Joe Rizzo on the MMA DieHards Radio Network. “Chuck got overaggressive.  He got hit with the big shot.  I was super bummed.  It was the hardest he worked in a few years.  It sucked.”

While Liddell’s future is pretty certain — only he and his camp can make the decision to retire — Shields remains in negotiation limbo despite being the Strikeforce middleweight champion.

He is a free agent, and his suitors are the Big Two: the UFC and Strikeforce.  Shields hasn’t put much input on where he is going, leaving it to his manager to deal with.

“My career goal was go out and fight the best fighters,” Shields said on the show.  “I want to go where I can find the best fights possible.”

Following his stunning victory over Dan Henderson, Shields took some time off by vacationing in Greece.  Now he’s back in the gym to stay in shape, anticipating when his next fight will be.  There have been claims that Shields has signed with the UFC, reports that he flatly denied on the air.

“Decisions aren’t made yet,” he said.  “We’re still in the early stages.  Nothing is 100 percent at this point.”

UFC president Dana White has made it no secret he would love to have Shields in the Octagon.  Shields has been visible at recent UFC cards and had plenty of face time on The Ultimate Fighter’s 11th season as a coach on Team Liddell.

White might not be the only one who wants Shields in the UFC.  Welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre has also called out Shields, expressing a strong desire to fight him.

“It’s awesome that someone like GSP would call me out,” Shields said.  “I’ve called him out.  Now he agrees I’m the person to fight.  That’s a lot of respect.  That’s a fight he wants, I want and a lot of fans want.”

If he was to remain with Strikeforce, Shields expects a fight with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza to be next on the docket, but he’s not picky.

“It’s up to the promotion to make the decision,” Shields said.

Despite what some fans are calling an easy move to the UFC, Shields said the decision is not as easy, considering Strikeforce’s recent growth and deals with CBS and Showtime.

“UFC holds prestige,” Shields said.  “I’m not trying to jump to conclusions.  I’m going to let my manager take care of that, and not be too forceful.”

Franklin to undergo surgery on broken left arm

UFC 115: Franklin, Cro Cop, Condit, MacDonald capture $85K bonus checks

For just the second time in his legendary career, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic used Brazilian jiu jitsu to submit an opponent, and it earned him $85,ooo.

Filipovic slapped a rear naked choke on Pat Barry, who tapped with 30 seconds left in their fight Saturday at UFC 115 in Vacouver, B.C.  “Cro Cop” then took the mic from Joe Rogan in the Octagon and petitioned UFC president Dana White to hand him the bonus check for submission of the night.

White granted “Cro Cop” his wish, giving the popular PRIDE veteran the nod over Mike Pyle, who was getting pounded in the final moments of the fight before securing a triangle to choke out Jesse Lennox with 16 seconds left, and Canadian Claude Patrick, who stunned Ricardo Funch with a powerful guillotine choke.

The other bonus checks for the event went to Rich Franklin, who knocked Chuck Liddell out cold with five seconds left in the first round to win knockout of the night, and to fight of the night combatants Carlos Condit and hometowner Rory MacDonald.  Condit earned a TKO with nine seconds left in a tight fight after unleashing a severe and relentless pounding on MacDonald for the entire third round.

Among his 27 wins, Filipovic now has four submissions.  But one was due to an injury and another from strikes.  Before finishing Barry, “Cro Cop” had scored just one other submission with technique, when he got Kevin Randleman to tap out in 41 seconds from a guillotine at PRIDE – Shockwave on New Year’s Eve in Japan at the end of 2004.

Franklin, a southpaw, broke his left arm from a kick by Liddell early in the fight but was not going to quit, he said.  With five seconds left, Franklin landed an abrupt right hook that caught the blitzing Liddell on the chin and put him to sleep, in all likelihood ending the Iceman’s career in the Octagon.   A former UFC middleweight champion, Franklin said he is taking aim at the getting the belt in the up-and-down light heavyweight division.

Condit took a beating from the 20-year-old MacDonald through two rounds.  In between the second and third rounds, the usually reserved Greg Jackson lit into Condit, imploring him to go to war and finish a fight the former WEC welterweight champion was losing.  Condit responded with an all-out attack that badly overwhelmed the game MacDonald, who admitted to being hurt by Condit throughout the fight.  With Condit in full mount laying down blows to the bloodied MacDonald, the fight was stopped nine seconds short of time.

The hometown crowd did not agree, and while it appeared MacDonald could have weathered the final moments, the stoppage was justified by the Canadian in his post-fight remarks.

UFC 115: Barry has broken right hand and foot

Not only did Pat Barry suffer a painful loss to Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 115 on Saturday in Vancouver, B.C., but he also ended up with a broken right hand and a broken bone in his right foot.

Barry dominated the first round, knocking down “Cro Cop” twice, but backing off each time to keep the fight standing.  Barry looked to be in complete control in the first round against Filipovic, but revealed via Twitter that he broke his right hand very early in the first, perhaps even by the third punch, and broke a bone in his foot within the first two rounds.

Barry slowed noticeable in the final two-thirds of the fight, during which time the injuries did not appear to be evident.  Filipovic endured the early beating, turned things around in the second round and appeared headed to the better side of what figured to be a close decision of a spirited fight when he sunk in a rear naked choke to which Barry tapped with 30 seconds remaining in the fight.

“It sucks to say, but I (panicked) last night after I knew my hand and foot were done,” Barry said on Twitter in response to someone asking him if he was undone by giving “Cro Cop” too much respect.

Filipovic pitched UFC boss Dana White for submission of the night in his post-fight Octagon interview with Joe Rogan, and White in fact did award the legend the $85,000 check on a night where there was solid competition for the money.
