Rear Naked Choke Radio on the MMA DieHards Radio Network took a look back at UFC 120 with Mike Pyle, and the UFC in UK Fan Expo with Best of Pride on Spike TV host Kenda Perez.  Plus, WEC 53 fighter Bart Palaszewski came on to assess the world of MMA.  In addition, hosts Joe Rizzo and Jeremy Fullerton broke down the odds and fights for UFC 121 and made their picks.

Joe and Jeremy bring you the show live from LA Boxing in Paramus, N.J. If you did not catch the live stream, the show is available right here on demand.

Mike was the biggest underdog on the board, but as he predicted, he beat hometown favorite John Hathaway in an impressive unanimous decision.

Kenda just got back from touring Europe and finished things off in London, where she was a hit at the UFC’s Fan Expo there and watched the Bisping-Akiyama card cageside.

Bart is taking on Kamal Shalorus at WEC 53 in December, but he’s always keeping track of what’s going on in MMA and added his color and insight.

Bisping, Akiyama face off at respective career crossroads

There are few figures in the MMA world quite as divisive as Michael Bisping.

His cheeky British sense of humor is uniformly misinterpreted as cocksure arrogance by pretty much anyone outside his native British isles. And what’s more, depending on who you ask, he’s either a standard-bearing trail blazer for UK MMA or he’s the somewhat blunt spearhead that (thanks as much to luck as merit) has found himself at the front of the UFC’s charge into the UK and European markets.

Saturday at London’s O2 Arena he takes on Japanese-Korean Judoka Yoshihiro Akiyama in a fight neither man can afford to lose.

UFC 100 proved to be a disappointing night for both men.

For Bisping, the promise of a title shot against long-reigning middle weight kingpin Anderson Silva faded into the distant horizon in the blink of an eye, thanks to a thunderous right courtesy of former dual-weight Pride legend Dan Henderson. Akiyama was extremely lucky to walk away with the narrowest of split decision victories against the perennially underrated  Alan Belcher. For “Sexyama” it was a stuttering start and not the empathetic American coming-out parade for which his online army was hoping.

Bisping and Akiyama share common opponents in Dennis Kang and Chris Leben, but a closer look at prior form only raises more questions than answers.

Kang rocked Bisping right out of the blocks in front of his English fans at UFC 105, forcing the Brit to dig deep and rally back from the brink. He did manage to grab victory from the jaws of defeat in perhaps his most resilient comeback win to date. Akiyama blasted the same man away handily in under five minutes under the K1-HERO’S banner back in 200.

At UFC  89 Leben was peppered with slick combination by an elusive and ever-circling Bisping, who was never in any real trouble on route to a unanimous shut out against the Ultimate Fighter season one alumni.  Akiyama fell spectacularly to the rejuvenated Crippler in a fight that unravelled dramatically into an all-out brawl. It ended with Leben collecting his second stunning upset win in as many weeks, a third-round submission win via a dramatic triangle choke secured with seconds to spare.

More troubling for Akiyama, questions remain regarding his cardio, which against the tireless 185-pound Bisping could well prove the Olympic judo medalist’s undoing. Bisping’s two most recent outings, a fiercely competitive defeat at the hands of Wanderlei Silva and a comfortable victory against Dan Miller, told little we didn’t already know about the British fighter.

Vitor Belfort, Yushin Okami, Nate Marquart, Demian Maia and (an appeal withstanding) Chael Sonnen all presently lead the charge toward Silva’s gold.  For the winner at UFC 120, it’s a chance to get right back in among the chasing back at middleweight. For the loser, it could mean dropping to the fringes of the UFC’s increasingly top-heavy 185-pound division for the foreseeable future. High stakes indeed.

On paper Bisping, will enjoy a size and strength advantage. The Count’s striking, though perhaps lacking in Leben’s thunderous one-punch knockout power, will certainly be tighter and crisper than the looping brawling Crippler-style that gave Akiyama so many problems in their barn-storming meeting UFC 116. Look out for the Count’s ever improving wrestling to meet some unorthodox opposition in the shape of Akiyama’s Olympic medal-winning judo. Bisping should just about shade it, especially if Akiyama shows up with his gas tank half-empty, as he has on previous occasions.

Bisping’s done a great deal for UK MMA, but a strong showing against Akiyama will be exactly the solid top-10 win he desperately needs if he’s to silence his doubters and regain the kind of momentum he enjoyed when he first made the transition to 185 pounds. For Akiyama, taking down perennial pantomime villain Bisping will, in all likelihood, make him as popular a figure among the casual fans as he already is among the hardcore. Which, as the UFC eyes further expansion into lucrative  Asian markets, would be no bad thing at all.

For both men involved expectations remain as ever: high. Will Bisping reassert his position among the division’s elite? Will Akiyama’s silky striking and unorthodox grappling prove the difference?  Watch it all unfold on Spike TV.

Kenda Perez: Daddy’s girl keeps the PRIDE going in MMA

Kenda Perez (UltimateFighter.com photo)

A long time ago, Ken Perez must have known something.

Perez’s daughter, Kenda, is the host of The Best of the PRIDE Fighting Championships on SpikeTV.  On a given night flipping through the channels, if you came across the striking good looks of Kenda, the former Maxim Hometown Hottie finalist, you easily would be inclined to hang around long enough to watch the PRIDE classics.

Kenda Perez, a recent guest on Rear Naked Choke Radio on the MMA DieHards Radio Network, is 27 years old.  About a year before she was born, Ken Perez began training in the martial arts.  He must have known how things were going to turn out, that his only child would win awards based on beauty but need the background of martial arts to thrust her career into the stratosphere.

“My dad has been training ever since I can remember,” she told hosts Joe Rizzo and Jeremy Fullerton on the show.  “I always remember watching him and seeing him compete.  So it’s always been a part of my life.”

Ken Perez is a blackbelt in Gen-buki Shito-ru.

“He doesn’t train MMA,” Kenda said.  “His sensei is actually the guy that did the ‘Karate Kid’ movies.  He doesn’t do any wrestling or anything like that.  It’s just strictly karate.  He’s training now to get his second degree.  I’m going to go watch him compete next month.  He’s still very active in it right now.

“I grew up pretty much watching him.  I got to wrestle around with him a little bit.”

The active lifestyle combined with the winning gene-pool lottery ticket left Kenda with a body on which, as UFC magazine put it, “Ripped Shirts Never Looked So Good.”

While the PRIDE show is her first real television gig, she did not win it on looks alone.  The critical UFC fans surely would have eaten alive a charlatan plugged into such a role.

Instead, what the tifosi got was one of their own, elevated into the Zuffa realm to bring back PRIDE to the masses with a seductive smile and refined brunette beauty.  That’s a long way from the days when the bald pates of old pros Bas Rutten, Jay Glazer or Frank Trigg were out front.

“I really am a fan,” Perez said.  “Before I even worked for the UFC, I was going to the events.  I was sitting in the nosebleed seats.  I get much better seats now.

“Probably boyfriends that I was dating in the past had it on.  At first, it wasn’t a big thing for girls to watch, but for some reason I was always interested in it.  And then I got this awesome opportunity to work for them and host this show.”

The first run lasted 26 shows, and Perez says she is getting back into the studio soon for what she believes will be a similar run for the second season.

Being the host has many benefits, including the immortalization that comes with having the Topps Trading Card Company make you a card.  The Kenda Perez card is No. 173 in the most recent set, which hit stores Sept. 15.

“I didn’t know it existed,” Perez told Fullerton, who is the UFC brand manager for Topps when he is not hosting RNC Radio.  “I was literally walking around (the UFC Fan Expo in Boston) and saw it and was like, Wow, what a nice surprise.”

The PRIDE show on Spike, the Topps card and the great seats at UFC events would not be hers if not for Maxim, a magazine that has taken an active interest in the MMA set and even made fighter Gina Carano No. 16 on its top 100 list in 2009.

“I was working with Maxim magazine, I did their Hometown Hotties contest, and I was in the finals,” Perez recalled.  “I did a photo shoot with them. I was doing a lot of promotion for them and also for a beer company.  We were shooting short commercials on film.  The issue that I was in for Maxim, the UFC had an article in there.  They found me from there, and they wanted some new talent.  They interviewed me and I got the job.”

Part of the job is watching video of the PRIDE fights.  When forced by the hosts to pick her favorite fighter from the PRIDE era, Perez said she would have to select Wanderlei Silva, with whom she has become friendly.

Perez says that Silva and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic seem to be the unofficial Top Two in terms of fan base in PRIDE Nation.

“I know they’re excited to see him fight (Frank Mir) at (UFC 119),” she said.

It’s not just the fighters and their names that appeal to the PRIDE fans.  According to Perez, the less strict rules had a lot to do with it.

“It was a little more brutal than what we have now in the UFC, which is why it has such a huge following,” she said.  “It was so brutal and raw.  Some of the big names in the UFC now, they came from PRIDE.  The UFC has done an awesome job in giving respect to PRIDE and showing their library of videos that they’ve acquired with purchasing it.”

The UFC has also taken some of the great showmanship that made PRIDE great.  Although UFC entrances have been known to be virtually eliminated for some events and downplayed for others, there are other aspects during fight night that make the six hours pass freely.

Nothing gets Perez’s attention more than the video montage that accompanies The Who’s Baba O’Riley, customarily played between the end of the prelims – which she never misses — and the start of the televised fights.

“Every single time that song comes on when I’m in the arena, I get goose bumps,” Perez admitted, sounding at that moment like she was getting them again.  “That whole video reel that they play along with it is the best.  It’s my favorite.”

For those that do not get to the arena for a UFC event to witness Baba O’Riley, they can settle for watching Perez bring them the best PRIDE had to offer as part of the smorgasbord of MMA available on TV.

“It’s the greatest thing ever,” she says.  “My dad couldn’t be happier.”

No need to tell him that.  Ken Perez knew all along.

Rear Naked Choke Radio: Kenda Perez, Joey Beltran, Matt Mitrione, Tracy Hackler

Rear Naked Choke Radio welcomed Kenda Perez, UFC 119 combatants Joey Beltran and Matt Mitrione, and Beckett’s Tracy Hackler to the show as Joe Rizzo and Jeremy Fullerton talked Pride, SpikeTV and collectibles.

RNC Radio streams live with video from LA Boxing in Paramus, N.J. Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Eastern (3:30-4:30 Pacific), unless otherwise noted.

Kenda is the host of The Best of PRIDE Fighting Championships on SpikeTV. You might have seen her photo spreads in Maxim (if not, you ought to check them out!).  Most importantly, Kenda is a died-in-the-wool MMA fan.  And her name is Kenda, not KendRa!

UFC heavyweight Joey “Mexicutioner” Beltran has posted wins over Tim Hague and Rolles Gracie inside the Octagon.  Next, he’s slated to face “TUF 10″ alum Matt Mitrione at UFC 119.  Beltran is mean inside the cage, but outside of it he is a true gentleman and even shared some of his time slot to talk directly to Mitrione on the air!

Tracy is the editorial director at Beckett, which hobbyists know to be something on the level of a bible.  With the explosion of UFC cards put forth by our own Jeremy, who is the brand manager for the UFC at Topps Trading Card Company, it’s a must-listen for anyone who is into seeing their MMA heroes immortalized.

DID YOU KNOW?  There is even a Kenda Perez card!  Watch the video stream and see a large number of the cards, including Kenda’s.

Dell’s Alienware Computers testing MMA waters

Fighters will be supporting Alienware's new M11x system which is an 11.5 inch, fully portable laptop gaming computer.

With mainstream companies like Nike, Gatorade, Under Armour and Everlast slowly entering the booming MMA industry wanting their piece of the growth, Suckerpunch Entertainment’s Brian Butler-Au announced Thursday the signing of another giant investing into MMA, Alienware Computers, which is a division of Dell.

The deal, which Butler-Au was putting together for over a year, entrusts Suckerpunch Entertainment to handle Alienware’s MMA business.  Jens Pulver, a passionate online gamer, will be the main face of the MMA brand of Alienware.

Pulver’s extensive online gaming background is highlighted by his appearance as an NPC in Vogster Entertainment’s CrimeCraft.  The former UFC lightweight champion will be providing color commentary, fight predictions, and give gaming analyis for Alienware, which was developed by Dell to target the younger demographic of online gamers — the same group on which MMA has thrived.

Pulver isn’t the only Suckerpunch fighter involved as Alienware has also signed UFC fighters Matt Mitrione, Amir Sadollah and Pat Barry.

Mitrione is set to take on Kimbo Slice at UFC 113 in Montreal on May 8.  The NFL veteran made a name for himself in MMA as a cast member on Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter and also runs Eden,  a successful supplement company.

The first-ever TUF winner to enter the show with no professional fights, Sadollah’s quirky sense of humor and dedicated work ethic aided his rapid rise to stardom in Season 7.  Sadollah also hosts “The Aftermath” weekly TUF review show on Spike.com.

Barry, coached by famed trainer and Free Roll radio co-host Duke Roufus, is a former K-1 kickboxer and the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest striker.” Nicknamed “Get Hype,” or “HD”, the athletic quote machine takes on legendary Pride champion Mirko ”Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 115 in Vancouver on June 12.
