MMA Draft offers solutions and gives amateurs in the sport an edge on the competition.

Here’s Johnny!

On tonight’s episode of Punch Drunk Radio, Amy Barton (Twitter: @amesbelle) and Alex Donno (Twitter: @AlexDonno) welcome Johny Hendricks and Dr. Johnny Benjamin to the show.

Hendricks (Twitter: @JohnyHendricks) is a No. 1 contender if there ever was one.  After defeating the division’s upper echelon of fighters, Hendricks was awarded a UFC welterweight title shot, but got shafted to give the fans Nick Diaz vs. Georges St-Pierre.  Nonetheless, Hendricks is keeping his name in the mix by taking on former No. 1 contender Carlos Condit at UFC 158, Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.

Dr. Johnny Benjamin (Twitter: @DrJCBenjamin) is no stranger to MMA.  He is often published on mmajunkie.com, giving his take on medical issues surrounding the sport.  From TRT abuse to proper weight cutting to PED use and transgender issues and beyond, Dr. Benjamin is the go-to-guy for the answers.

There is dumb, and then there’s DUMB. Like making a joke to the cashier in Publix about how lame Mickey Mouse is – while the kid bagging your groceries is wearing … wait for it … a Mickey Mouse t-shirt. Because of course he is. That’s dumb. (Not that it happened to us recently or anything.) And then there’s DUMB. Like today’s revelation that in 2020, wrestling will not be a part of the Olympics. It’s an original Olympic sport, for cripe’s sake. But apparently golf will be in there. And badminton. And dressage. And table tennis … freakin’ ping-pong, kids! And sailing. It’s asinine, it’s ludicrous, and we’re going to talk to someone who knows a bunch about it and get some damned answers.

Tonight, Amy (Twitter: @amesbelle) and guest co-host Fighters.com’s John Petit (Twitter: @Scream13) welcome to Punch Drunk Radio brand-spankin’ new UFC bantamweight Sara McMann, plus Bellator’s Andreas Spang. And Bellator favorite Lloyd Woodard (Twitter: @mmacupcake) will check in, too. And it all happens an hour earlier than normal at 8 p.m. ET, so set your alarms!

McMann (Twitter: @Sara_McMann) is the first woman in U.S. history to win silver at the Olympics in wrestling. Her background in the sport will be a huge topic of conversation tonight, and she’ll share her thoughts on today’s news. Plus, she had a pretty big day personally, as well, as the UFC announced she is officially a member of the promotion. We’ll see if she can spill the beans on when we might see her first fight in the octagon, and who it might be against. She’ll bring an unbeaten 6-0 record into her UFC debut.

Spang (Twitter: @AndreasSpang) has a big fight on Thursday at Bellator 89 against WEC veteran Doug Marshall in the opening round of the promotion’s Season 8 middleweight tournament. Spang (8-2) hasn’t fought since last May, when he lost to Maiquel Falcao in the Season 6 middleweight tournament finals. Thursday begins what he hopes is the road back to another shot at the $100,000 tournament prize and a shot at the belt.

Tune in to Punch Drunk Radio every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET (until TUF is over, then we’ll take our happy butts back to 9 p.m. ET) for exclusive fighter interviews, special guests, breaking news, contests, event recaps and much more – only on the MMA DieHards Radio Network. We bet you never thought we’d get back to normal, did you? Well, you’re right! Only because we were never “normal” to begin with. But we ARE back to our regularly scheduled Punch Drunkery! Hosts Alex Donno and Amy Barton welcome Bellator middleweight Brian “The Professional Predator” Rogers and UFC prospect (and former Score Fighting series fighter) Josh “Gentleman” Hill.

Rogers (Twitter: @BRogThePredator) is set to face Dan Cramer Feb. 14 in Bellator’s Season 8 middleweight tournament. When did “Professional” become part of the moniker? You can bet your butts we’re going to ask. Brian also chats with Alex and Amy about everything from Dan Cramer, Bellator’s tournament setup, Eddie Alvarez, Bjorn Rebney, and Randy Couture, to fashion do’s & don’ts and what the future of his follicles may be.

UFC prospect Josh Hill (Twitter: @gentlemanjhill) has plenty to say. The former Score Fighting Series fighter explains his current situation right down to the nitty grit. “I thought The Score sent out a press release saying they weren’t closing down!”, you might say. You’d be right. Josh, under the impression he’d be fighting for them this coming March, tells a much different story. Unfortunately for Hill, he’d expected a possible invitation to join the ranks of other UFC bantamweights after “one more fight”. Now stuck in a limbo of wanting one more fight, but being offered multi-fight deals, Josh will tell all about his next venture.

UFC 158: Mike Ricci’s a fighter first, reality star second

UFC lightweight and TUF 16 finalist Mike "The Martian" Ricci (Photo courtesy of ufc.com)

UFC lightweight Mike Ricci is done with people doubting his combat skills.

“The Martian” first made waves as a finalist in last year’s “The Ultimate Fighter 16″ welterweight tournament. Since then, he’s courted controversy by slamming the TUF experience as ultimately unpleasant for its participants. It’s a criticism Ricci (Twitter: @MikeyRicci) still stands by, and one he says doesn’t affect his fighting abilities.

“For me the problem with TUF was being away from home,” he told MMADiehards’ Punch Drunk Radio last Tuesday. “It had nothing to do with fighting or making weight.”

Now in its 17th season, TUF is the UFC’s reality TV series for recruiting and signing new fighters. Though Ricci revealed he’s grateful for the exposure, he said the star-making program too often focuses on trivialities rather than actual talent. The end result is entertainment first and elite athletics second.

“The Martian,” for example, found viewers were often distracted by his distinct hairstyle. Rather than watch his exploits in the cage, he said they’d discuss his fashion sense instead.

“I’d rather have people talking than not talking,” Ricci admitted. “But it’s been three years now since I first got this haircut. I’ve been fighting for a while now, and I’ve won fights – sometimes in devastating fashion – and lost others too. I’ve proved I’m a fighter regardless of my haircut.”

Ricci said such misplaced priorities are frustrating given that MMA is more competitive than ever before. The sport’s mainstream success is attracting more talent, he said, and it’s now a booming battlefield for new fighters.

“I think the challenge of competing on TUF is still high,” Ricci said. “The playing field is leveling out. Everybody’s getting good at everything. I think that’s why there’s a lot less finishes on the show now.”

“The Martian” confronted this phenomenon firsthand during the TUF 16 Finale last December. Facing off with Colton Smith, Ricci lost via unanimous decision. At day’s end, both men were too evenly matched for a decisive finish.

That meeting’s result ensured Ricci made his UFC debut in defeat. He’s now trying to bounce back with a victory over “Freakshow” Colin Fletcher at UFC 158 in March. It’s a tough challenge given Fletcher’s penchant for pre-fight mind games. “Freakshow” is notorious for wearing elaborate walkout costumes and insulting his foes.

“Some guys are good at getting into other guys’ heads and some guys aren’t,” Ricci said of Fletcher’s psychological warfare. “It’s not really my thing. Fletcher is actually a nice guy, though, and I’ve seen some of his interviews. He’s an intelligent dude, and he markets himself very well.”

Ricci said he’s convinced he has the tools for overcoming Fletcher’s antics. Even if he doesn’t, “The Martian” revealed one final weapon. A proud native of Montreal, Canada, Ricci’s fight with Fletcher will take place at his hometown’s Bell Centre.

“The crowds here are incredible,” Ricci said of the support he’ll receive at home. “Whether it’s boxing or MMA, the fight roots run real deep here. I went to a UFC event once in Toronto with 60,000 other people and it wasn’t as loud as the last time Georges St-Pierre fought in Montreal.”

Mark Hensch is an avid MMA fan who became interested in the sport through wrestling and karate. When not covering the hurt business, he writes about heavy metal for the Washington Times at his blog Heavy Metal Hensch in Washington D.C.
