    Nate Marquardt Signs with Strikeforce

Less than a year after his departure from UFC, Marquardt has signed a new deal with Strikeforce to compete in their welterweight division.

While there was no confirmation on his debut date or opponent, current expectations are for Marquardt to meet Tyron Woodley for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title later this year.

Ironically enough, while Marquardt was released last year from his UFC contract after elevated testosterone levels kept him out of his scheduled fight at UFC on Versus 4 against Rick Story, the Colorado based fighter never actually competed in another promotion.

Marquardt was signed to the British promotion BAMMA and was expected to debut in February, but after multiple delays the fighter asked and received his release from the organization.

Glover Teixeira signs with UFC, targeted for early-summer debut

Glover Teixeira (17-2) has signed with the UFC.

After visa issues ultimately forced him out of the U.S. and ruined the possibility of a deal with the world's top promotion, the fast-rising light heavyweight has inked a UFC deal.

Teixeira, a 10-year pro, enters the UFC with a 15-fight and six-year win streak. His victories have come over the likes of Ricco Rodriguez, Marvin Eastman, Antonio Mendes, Daniel Tabera and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. Among his 17 career wins, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and grappling champion owns 11 knockouts and four submissions.

The 32-year-old Teixeira is expected to make his promotional debut in early summer, though a specific date and opponent have not been determined.

UFC 146 adds Jacob Volkmann vs. Paul Sass

A lightweight bout between Jacob Volkmann (14-2) and undefeated Paul Sass (12-0) is in the works for UFC 146 in Las Vegas.

Since dropping his first two UFC fights to welterweights Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann, Volkmann has won five consecutive fights in the lightweight division. Most recently, the three-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler picked up a unanimous-decision victory over Efrain Escudero at UFC 141. In fact, all five of his recent wins have come via decision, including split-decision nods over Ronys Torres and Antonio McKee.

Sass recently picked up his second UFC victory (and his 12th straight win overall) with a heel-hook submission of Michael Johnson at UFC on Versus 6 in October. The British fighter, who recently was forced out of a UFC on FOX 2 bout with Evan Dunham due to an injury, now owns 11 submissions in 12 career victories.

UFC 146 takes place May 26 in Las Vegas at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

  • Invicta Fighting Championships

    February 21, 2012 9:51:41 AM

Ex-champ Marloes Coenen vs. Romy Ruyssen headlines all-female Invicta 1 card

Former Strikeforce champion Marloes Coenen (19-5) and fellow 145-pounder Romy Ruyssen (5-1) will meet in the headliner of the debut Invicta Fighting Championships event.

Former UFC, Strikeforce and IFL talent-relations executive Shannon Knapp serves as the upstart organization's vice president and co-founder.

"The time has come for a platform dedicated exclusively to building the growing women's division in our great sport,” Knapp stated. "Invicta is committed to increasing the depth of the women's field and building female superstars by providing women athletes with the opportunity to compete and hone their skills on a consistent basis throughout the year."

Coenen fights for the first time since losing her Strikeforce 135-pound title to Miesha Tate in July, when she surprisingly was cut from the promotion. The Dutch submission specialist now meets  French fighter Romy Ruyssen (5-1), who looks for her fifth straight win (and sixth submission victory in six wins).

Co-headlining the event are strawweights (105 pounds) Jessica Penne (8-1) vs. Lisa Ellis-Ward (14-7). Other main-card bouts include bantamweights Liz Carmouche (5-2) vs. Ashleigh Curry (1-0), bantamweights Leslie Smith (3-2) vs. Kaitlin Young (7-5), bantamweights Sarah D'Alelio (4-2) vs. Shana Nelson (5-2), and flyweights Sally Krumdiack (9-4) vs. Sarah Schneider (5-5).

The all-female card takes place April 28 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan.

  • The Score Fighting Series

    February 19, 2012 7:48:15 PM

Two fights added to The Score Fighting Series March event in Hamilton, Ontario

The Score Fighting Series has announced two additional bouts for its Friday, March 16th event at Hamilton Place Theatre in Hamilton, Ontario.

World Muay Thai champion Shane Campbell of Stoney Creek will face off with fellow power striker Derek Boyle of Lethbridge, Alberta at lightweight (155 pounds) and unbeaten prospect Ryan Dickson (2-0) of Hamilton will duke it out with Chris St. Jean (5-3) of Ottawa at welterweight (170 pounds).

The 24-year-old, six-foot Campbell, comes from a strong lineage of kickboxing talent at Stoney Creek’s Iron Muay Thai, under master trainer Kru Alin Halmagean.  Since he made his MMA debut in June 2008, Campbell has taken on the grueling task of simultaneously maintaining his kickboxing career where he holds an overall record of 45-10 (11 KO’s).

Campbell’s opponent, 27-year-old, six-foot Boyle (7-5), has earned more than half of his victories by KO.  He is coming off an incredible flying knee KO of Alex Popov in September.

Dickson (2-0) is the prize student of local MMA icon Jeff Joslin, the first and only Hamiltonian to date to fight in the UFC.  The 22-year-old prospect claimed both his victories to date by way of submission.

St. Jean, 27, (5-3), who fights out of the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts under Pat Cooligan, has proved to be one of the more durable fighters in the sport after competing seven times in 2011.  All five of St. Jean’s career wins have come by way of either KO or submission.

The Score Fighting Series takes place Friday, March 16th at the Hamilton Place Theatre in Hamilton, Ontario.

UFC on FUEL TV 2 adds Yoislandy Izquierdo vs. Reza Madadi

The fight card for April's UFC on FUEL TV 2 event in Sweden is complete with this latest addition.

Undefeated lightweight Yoislandy Izquierdo (6-0) has agreed to fight Iranian-Swedish fighter Reza Madadi (11-2) at the event.

Izquierdo,  makes his promotional debut after a UFC on FUEL TV 1 booking was canceled due to a contract dispute with a previous organization. Most recently, the Cuban-born fighter, who's currently based out of Florida, knocked out then-undefeated Patrick Cenoble  in a Championship Fighting Alliance title fight. Half of the Cuban fighter's wins have now come via knockout.

Madadi recently was forced out of a UFC on FX 1 bout with Fabrício Camoes due to an injury. He now makes his UFC debut on the strength of a 6-0 record that included a series of SCC wins over notables such as Junie Browning, Carlo Prater and Rich Clementi.

UFC on FUEL TV 2 takes place April 14 at Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

UFC on FUEL TV 2: Eric Wisely steps in for the injured Akira Corassani

As mentioned previously at MMADieHards.com, Akira Corassani has suffered an injury and had to pull from the Swedish based event, but a replacement has now been found.

UFC officials announced today that stepping in to face Corassani's abandoned opponent, Jason Young (8-5), will be Eric Wisely (19-7).

If the name Wisely sounds familiar, that may be because in his most recent outing, he fell victim to Charles Oliveira's painful calf slicer at UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis.  Going 5-2 in his last seven fights, the featherweight was previously victorious at SEG: Downtown Showdown 1, where Wisely beat Brandon Girtz via TKO.

Young, a British fighter, is looking to make his third appearance in the Octagon a charm as he has yet to find a way to win in the cage.  Joining the promotion in 2011, Young fought Dustin Poirier in his first bout at UFC 131, but fell short in the judges' eyes.  Young fell to the same fate against Michihiro Omigawa at UFC 138, which has led him to a record of 2-3 over the last two years.

Also, a bout between Lyle Beerbohm (16-2) and Jamie Varner (19-6-1) has changed as well.

Varner is out of the fight and will be replaced by UFC veteran Derrick Noble (26-15).

  • Resurrection Fighting Alliance 2

    February 18, 2012 11:03:28 PM

Resurrection Fighting Alliance 2 adds Maurice Smith vs. Kyle Keeney

Former UFC heavyweight champion Maurice Smith (12-13), at 50 years old, will fight again.

Smith is expected to face Washington's Kyle "Kodiak" Keeney (12-7) at the event and the headlining bout is expected to see Houston Alexander face Gilbert Yvel.

Smith, a kickboxing specialist, made his MMA debut in 1993 and fought his first six bouts under the Pancrase banner. He later made his way to the UFC, where a UFC 14 win over Mark Coleman saw him claim the promotion's heavyweight title. He then defended the belt against "Tank" Abbott at UFC 15 before surrendering the title to Randy Couture at UFC Japan.

Keeney looks to snap a two-fight losing streak. Prior to the skid, Keeney had earned six wins in seven trips to the cage.

Kenney opened his career with a perfect 5-0 mark but then suffered through a four-fight losing streak against D.J. Linderman, Bristol Marunde, Lodune SIncaid and Mike Hayes.

UFC on FOX 3: Pablo Garza vs. Dennis Bermudez added to New Jersey card

UFC matchmakers have put together a featherweight bout between Pablo Garza (11-2) and Dennis Bermudez (7-3) for UFC on FOX 3.

UFC officials made the announcement today.

Entering the UFC through season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter, Garza was one half of the organizations inaugural featherweight bout at the reality shows finale.  In spectacular fashion, Garza ended the bout against Fredson Paixão with a flying knee that saw him earning knock-out of the night honors.  Having two bouts since, Garza earned submission of the night award over Yves Jabouin at UFC 140, but fell short in his last outing against Dustin Poirier at UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos.

His opponent, Bermudez, has had trouble finding a win since going 7-0 to start his career.  Suffering his first loss against Drew Fickett at Shine Fights 3 in 2010, Bermudez has yet to get back into the win column.  Having lost two straight before entering the UFC, the New Yorker met Diego Brandao at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale where he fell short, losing via armbar submission late in the first round.

UFC on FOX 3 takes place May 5 at IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J.

UFC on FOX 3 adds Nick Denis vs. Johnny Bedford

A bantamweight bout between Nick Denis (11-2) and "The Ultimate Fighter 14" semifinalist Johnny Bedford (18-9-1) is the latest addition to UFC on FOX 3.

Denis, a Canadian fighter and KOTC/World Victory Road vet, made his UFC debut this past month at UFC on FX 1. The knockout artist used a series of devastating standing elbow strikes to scored a 22-second KO win over Joseph Sandoval. He's now 4-1 in his past five fights, and his past nine victories have come via knockout.

Bedford recently made his official UFC debut and beat down an undersized Louis Gaudinot at the TUF 14 Finale. Bedford, who was eliminated from the reality show by eventual show champion John Dodson, is now 7-1 over his past eight pro fights. The former NCAA Division I wrestler and Fitness Fight Factory member was slated to fight Mitch Gagnon (a replacement for Eddie Wineland, who was a replacement for Demetrious Johnson) at UFC on FOX 2, but the bout was scrapped due to Gagnon's visa issues.

UFC on FOX 3 takes place May 5 at IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J.

UFC on FUEL TV 2: Akira Corassani pulled due to injury

An undisclosed injury has forced "The Ultimate Fighter 14" cast member Akira Corassani (9-3) out of a featherweight bout with Jason Young (8-5) at April's UFC on FUEL TV 2 event.

Corassani was a fiery member of the "TUF 14" cast. After a semifinal finish on the reality series, the Renzo Gracie-trained fighter was forced out of a bout on the show's live finale due to an injury. His official UFC debut will again need to wait.

Young gets a third chance at a first UFC win. The British fighter and Cage Rage veteran made his octagon debut in 2011 and suffered decision losses to Dustin Poirier (UFC 131) and Michihiro Omigawa (UFC 138). Prior to the UFC contract, he was on a 4-1 run with three decision victories. He now finds himself in a must-win situation.

UFC on FUEL TV 1 bonuses: Miocic, Menjivar, Ellenberger, Sanchez get $50K awards

Stipe Miocic, Ivan Menjivar, Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez each earned $50,000 fight-night bonuses for their performances at Wednesday's UFC on FUEL TV 1 event.

Miocic earned the night's "Knockout of the Night" award, Menjivar picked up the "Submission of the Night" bonus, and Ellenberger and Sanchez earned "Fight of the Night" honors.

Miocic needed just 43 seconds to stop fellow heavyweight Phillip De Fries in a main-card bout. Miocic shook off some early blows before landing his own and crumpling De Fries with punches in the first minute of the bout.

Menjivar, who kicked off the night's FUEL TV broadcast, met fellow bantamweight John Albert in a one-round barnburner. Albert had his opponent rocked early, but Menjivar stormed back and ultimately got the stoppage via rear-naked choke.

Ellenberger and Sanchez, meanwhile, headlined the event and concluded the night with a rousing and bloody three-rounder. Ellenberger, a Nebraska native, won the first two rounds and then fended off a late charge by Sanchez to earn a unanimous-decision victory.

    February 13, 2012 11:41:00 PM

TPF 12 adds Robert Emerson vs. Savant Young and Francisco Rivera vs. Antonio Duarte

Two more bouts have been added to the bill for Tachi Palace Fights 12 “Second Coming.”

Tachi Palace Entertainment Coordinator Jeremy Luchau confirmed that a 150-pound catchweight bout between Robert Emerson (11-10) and Savant Young (10-8) and a bantamweight clash between Francisco Rivera (6-2) and Antonio Duarte (15-3) will take place on the March 9 card.

Emerson, a seven-time UFC competitor, is in the process of cutting from lightweight to featherweight. The Team Oyama representative last fought on Jan. 29, dropping a unanimous decision to Justin Salas. The 30-year-old Californian earned victories over Keita Nakamura, Manny Gamburyan and Phillipe Nover during his UFC tenure.

After more than a three-year absence from the sport, Young returned to action at TPF 11 in December, where he submitted Robert Washington with a guillotine choke in the second round. It was Young’s first fight since falling to Mark Hominick at Affliction “Banned” in July 2008. The International Fight League veteran owns notable wins against Kendall Grove, Ed West and Takeshi Inoue.

Rivera stopped a two-fight losing streak by knocking out Brad McDonald, the brother of UFC bantamweight prospect Michael McDonald, in 40 seconds at TPF 11. The former WEC featherweight has finished four of his six career victories by knockout or technical knockout.

A staple of the Mexican mixed martial arts circuit, Duarte has been victorious in 15 of his 18 career professional bouts, with nine victories coming by way of submission. “Tigre” has fought outside of his homeland just once as a professional, dropping a unanimous decision to Albert Rios at Affliction “Day of Reckoning” in 2009.

TPF 12: Second Coming takes place March 9 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif.
