Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland set for title fight at UFC 161A title fight between interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao (30-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) and former WEC bantamweight champ Eddie Wineland (20-8-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) will headline UFC 161.
Sources with knowledge of the planned bout told MMAjunkie.com(www.mmajunkie.com) that it has been verbally agreed to on one side. ESPN initially tweeted news of the fight today while citing UFC President Dana White.
UFC officials later issued a formal announcement.
UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MPS Centre in Winnipeg and is the promotion's first visit to the Manitoba province in Canada. Already booked for the event are Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and Jake Shields-Tyron Woodley.
The UFC recently formalized those fights, and teased that a UFC 161 main event would be announced soon. However, additional sources told MMAjunkie.com that Barao, who just this past month fought Michael McDonald in London, was awaiting medical clearance following that fight, which he won with a fourth-round submission. Wineland, however, is good to go following his most recent win in December.
Barao beat Urijah Faber by unanimous decision in July to win the interim belt and run his unbeaten streak to 30 fights. He upped that number to 31 with his arm-triangle choke tap-out of McDonald this past month in UFC on FUEL TV 7's main event.
Wineland, who was the first 135-pound champion in WEC history, has won two straight fights and six of his past eight. Before coming to the UFC, he closed out his WEC career with four straight wins, including back-to-back "Knockout of the Night" performances against Will Campuzano and Ken Stone.
In his first fight in the UFC, he lost a unanimous decision to Faber, who went on to a title fight against Dominick Cruz. Wineland's next outing was another decision loss, this time to Faber teammate Joseph Benavidez. But with the two-fight skid, he rebounded with a "Fight of the Night" knockout of Scott Jorgensen this past June and a split-decision win over Brad Pickett at UFC 155 in December.
News of the interim title fight, though, apparently means the hoped-for timetable for champion Cruz's return to the octagon will be on the high end of the estimate, or perhaps longer. In December, it was announced that Cruz (19-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) needed a second knee surgery and the recovery time could be six to nine months.

Jose Aldo Injured, Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao Shifted to Headline UFC 149The summer of injuries lives on, and Jose Aldo has now joined its growing list of causalities.
Aldo, the reigning UFC featherweight champion, was removed from the main event of UFC 149 after suffering an undisclosed injury, promotion officials announced on Saturday.
With Aldo sidelined, UFC 148's interim bantamweight title fight between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao will now headline UFC 149.
Officials have yet to comment if Erik Koch, Aldo's opponent, will remain on the card, only stating that the title tilt is "postponed."
UFC 149 takes place July 21, 2012 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Canada. Already, the main card has been eviscerated by injuries, losing Michael Bisping, Mauricio Rua vs. Thiago Silva, and Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Thiago Alves in recent weeks.
With Faber and Barao off UFC 148, promotion officials have not revealed a new co-main event. Barao, of course, is an injury replacement for UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, who suffered an ACL injury while coaching opposite Faber on The Ultimate Fighter Live.

Bibiano Fernandes Out of UFC 149 Because He Never Signed ContractA week after announcing that former DREAM champion Bibiano Fernandes signed with the UFC, the organization broke the news that the Brazilian will no longer be competing at UFC 149. The reason? Well, according to Fernandes, he never signed a UFC contract to begin with.
"I would like to make it clear that I am not a UFC athlete as I did not sign any contract with the UFC organization," he wrote on his Facebook page. "Negotiations between the UFC and myself did take place, however, we could not resolve the issues on the table and as a result we did not come to an agreement."
According to sources close to Fernandes, he has received a more lucrative offer from ONE FC, but he has yet to sign that contract as well.
Fernandes (11-3) was scheduled to meet Roland Delorme (8-1) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. No word just yet on who Delorme will now face.
This marks another blow to what was once a solid, sold-out card. The following is a list of all the main card fighters who have pulled out of UFC 149 for one reason or another: Jose Aldo, Erik Koch, Thiago Alves, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Shogun Rua, Thiago Silva, Michael Bisping. Fernandes wasn't scheduled to fight on the main card.
As a result, the new pay-per-view lineup currently looks like this:
Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao -- interim bantamweight title
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cheick Kongo
Tim Boetsch vs. Hector Lombard
Siyar Bahadurzada vs. Chris Clements
Court McGee vs. Nick Ring (not officially announced as a PPV fight)Source: www.mmafighting.com
