Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland set for title fight at UFC 161A title fight between interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao (30-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) and former WEC bantamweight champ Eddie Wineland (20-8-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) will headline UFC 161.
Sources with knowledge of the planned bout told MMAjunkie.com(www.mmajunkie.com) that it has been verbally agreed to on one side. ESPN initially tweeted news of the fight today while citing UFC President Dana White.
UFC officials later issued a formal announcement.
UFC 161 takes place June 15 at MPS Centre in Winnipeg and is the promotion's first visit to the Manitoba province in Canada. Already booked for the event are Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and Jake Shields-Tyron Woodley.
The UFC recently formalized those fights, and teased that a UFC 161 main event would be announced soon. However, additional sources told MMAjunkie.com that Barao, who just this past month fought Michael McDonald in London, was awaiting medical clearance following that fight, which he won with a fourth-round submission. Wineland, however, is good to go following his most recent win in December.
Barao beat Urijah Faber by unanimous decision in July to win the interim belt and run his unbeaten streak to 30 fights. He upped that number to 31 with his arm-triangle choke tap-out of McDonald this past month in UFC on FUEL TV 7's main event.
Wineland, who was the first 135-pound champion in WEC history, has won two straight fights and six of his past eight. Before coming to the UFC, he closed out his WEC career with four straight wins, including back-to-back "Knockout of the Night" performances against Will Campuzano and Ken Stone.
In his first fight in the UFC, he lost a unanimous decision to Faber, who went on to a title fight against Dominick Cruz. Wineland's next outing was another decision loss, this time to Faber teammate Joseph Benavidez. But with the two-fight skid, he rebounded with a "Fight of the Night" knockout of Scott Jorgensen this past June and a split-decision win over Brad Pickett at UFC 155 in December.
News of the interim title fight, though, apparently means the hoped-for timetable for champion Cruz's return to the octagon will be on the high end of the estimate, or perhaps longer. In December, it was announced that Cruz (19-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) needed a second knee surgery and the recovery time could be six to nine months.

UFC on FX 3 bonuses: Pyle, Silva, Wineland and Jorgensen earn $40K bonusesMike Pyle, Erick Silva, Eddie Wineland and Scott Jorgensen each earned $40,000 bonuses for their performances at Friday night's UFC on FX 3 event.
Pyle earned the "Knockout of the Night" bonus, Silva picked up the "Submission of the Night" award, while Wineland and Jorgensen were awarded "Fight of the Night" honors.
Pyle earned his extra money with an incredible finish of the always durable Josh Neer. With time winding down on the clock, Pyle unleashed a slick one-two to the chin that dropped Neer, and Pyle walked off with just four seconds left on the first-round clock, scoring the "Knockout of the Night" in the process.
Silva earned his bonus with an impressive first-round finish of Charlie Brenneman. Showing little regard for his opponents wrestling abilities, Silva dove onto the back and quickly locked in a fight-ending rear-naked choke that earned him the evening's "Submission of the Night."
Wineland and Jorgensen combined for a scrap worthy of two top bantamweight veterans. Both fighters moved forward from the opening bell, and while Jorgensen was unable to utilize his vaunted wrestling attack, he was able to do damage on the fight with a stiff jab and a knee that opened up a nasty cut on his opponent's forehead. However, it was Wineland who would earn the victory, landing a devastating right hand that sent Jorgensen to the canvas. The effort was enough for both fighters to cash in on the evening's "Fight of the Night" bonus.
UFC on FX 3 took place at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

Scott Jorgensen vs. Eddie Wineland added to UFC on FX 3An intriguing bantamweight matchup between Scott Jorgensen (13-5) and Eddie Wineland (18-8-1) has been added to UFC on FX 3.
Jorgensen looks to bounce back from a disappointing decision loss to Barao this past February. The result snapped a two-fight win streak for Jorgensen built after an unsuccessful bid for the WEC's bantamweight belt at December 2010's WEC 53 event.
Meanwhile, Wineland, the WEC's first-ever bantamweight champion, tries for the third time to earn a win in the UFC's octagon. Wineland ended his time in the WEC on a four-fight win streak with victories over Ken Stone, Will Campuzano, George Roop and Manny Tapia. However, since migrating to the UFC, Wineland has dropped back-to-back fights to Joseph Benavidez and Urijah Faber.
UFC on FX 3 takes place June 8. While the main card airs on FX, officials haven't finalized a venue for the event.

Johnny Bedford vs. Eddie Wineland at UFC on FOX 2With Demetrious Johnson scratched from the card so he could compete in the inaugural UFC flyweight tournament in March, Johnny Bedford has taken his spot on next month's UFC on FOX 2 card.
Bedford (18-9-1) takes on fellow bantamweight Eddie Wineland (18-8-1) on the night's preliminary card.
Bedford, who was knocked out of the "TUF 14" bantamweight semifinals by eventual show winner John Dodson, returned earlier this month on the undercard of the show's live finale, where he scored a vicious third-round TKO beatdown of fellow cast member Louis Gaudinot. The onetime Bellator fighter is now 7-1 over his past eight pro fights, and five of the wins came via stoppage.
Wineland, a former WEC champion, looks to snap a two-fight losing streak. After piecing together a four-fight win streak in the now-defunct WEC (which included two "Knockout of the Night" awards), Winleand has dropped consecutive decisions to Joseph Benavidez and Urijah Faber under the UFC banner.
UFC on FOX 2 takes place Jan. 28 at Chicago's United Center.
