Brian Cushing, NFL Rookie of the Year, plus Greg Soto, Frank Rizzo Jr. on Rear Naked Choke Radio

Brian Cushing is a fierce linebacker with the Houston Texans, but in the offseason, the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year has taken to MMA training to add another physical dimension.

Brian joined Rear Naked Choke Radio and hosts Joe Rizzo and Hector Castro on Wednesday and talked about his new regimen, what it means to train with the likes of Jay Glazer, Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell, and why it’s important for an elite athlete to try new things.  The show streams live from LA Boxing in Paramus, N.J.

This ended up being an NJ love-in, as Greg Soto, fresh off the news of his UFC 118 fight with Nick Osipczak, joined in the fray.  Hector busted him for being “wifeyed up” and Greg talked about how he and Kurt Pellegrino  are headed to Montreal on Thursday to step up his camp with Jon Chaimberg at Tri-Star, with Kenny Florian.

Did you know that Brian went back to USC this spring and recently finished classes to complete his sociology degree?  And here’s another fact: Brian went to the same high school, Bergen Catholic in Oradell, N.J., as Rear Naked Choke Radio host Joe Rizzo, San Francisco Giants third baseman Mark DeRosa and New York Giants announcer Bob Papa.  Brian’s high school teammate and Joe’s nephew, Frank Rizzo Jr., joined the show for the final segment.

Matt “Meat” Mitrione, formerly of The Ultimate Fighter’s 10th season, took on The Free Roll.

Cameron Gidari and Hector Castro (subbing for Duke Roufus) chatted up Matt about his upcoming fight with Kimbo Slice, his TUF 10 castmate.

Matt has been training under Duke for a significant part of his camp for this fight, and talks about how it’s made a huge difference in his game.  He also especially noted Duke’s ability to help with cardio for big men.

Matt has been working with Eric “Red” Shafer, and talked about how his ground game has improved.  “I’m making up submissions,” he said.  “I think I’m going to come up with something and call it the ‘Meat-o-tine.’ ”

Rear Naked Choke Radio has all the promotions covered.

On the MMA DieHards Radio Network, hosts Joe Rizzo and Hector Castro take on the UFC with Sam Stout, the WEC with Leonard Garcia, and Bellator with Bryan Baker.

Stout (15-5-1) will be fighting Jeremy Stephens on May 8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, in front of his native Canadian fans at UFC 113.   Stout won fight of the night honors with his UFC 108 unanimous decision victory over Joe Lauzon.

Garcia (14-5-1) is coming off a fight of the night bonus performance that he won at WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber after his split decision war against the Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung.   The battle immediately was being talked about with fight of the year potential.

Baker (11-1) competes at Bellator 16 against Sean Loeffler in a quarterfinal match in the middleweight tournament.  “The Beast” has wins over UFC veterans Jesse Forbes, Matt Horwich and Rory Singer, with his only loss coming to UFC middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen, with whom he went the distance at WEC 33.

Jeff Clark has been a professional fighter, MMA coach and one of the most highly respected managers in the industry.

Originally fighting out of Carlsbad, Calif., Clark was a member of North County Fight Club, where he trained with teammates Jason Lambert, Eddie Sanchez and others.  Clark is a US champion in full-contact karate and holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Roy Harris.

He won the Grapplers Quest Master’s Division in 2003.  Clark is also a noted expert on MMA and frequently featured in publications and other media.  He was named to the prestigious 2009 Fight! Power 20, selected as one of “the top movers and shakers in the mixed martial arts world” by the leading industry lifestyle magazine.

Rear Naked Choke Radio on location with King Mo, Daniel Cormier

Rear Naked Choke Radio had another special live event Saturday on location at LA Boxing in Paramus, NJ where fighters King Mo Lawal and Daniel Cormier joined Hector Castro and Joe Rizzo in person.

King Mo (7-0) won the Strikeforce light-heavyweight belt with a unanimous decision victory over Gegard Mousasi on April 17.   The bout aired on CBS, giving many their first exposure to one of the most intriguing personalities in all of MMA.

Cormier is a former USA Olympic wrestler who is 2-0 in his transition into MMA.  Also fighting under the Strikeforce banner, Cormier pounded out John Devine in 69 seconds at Strikeforce Challengers 7 in a heavyweight match on March 26.

King Mo and Cormier both were standout wrestlers at Oklahoma State.

Joe Rizzo and Hector Castro were live cageside Thursday at Bellator 15 at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney gave one of his best and more revealing interviews when he sat down with Joe and Hector. Bjorn revealed how hard the organization tried to get Jim Wallhead into Connecticut from England despite the Icelandic volcano that caused havoc, credited the hosts on their sources for getting information about the promotion’s choice of locations, and left no stone unturned when it came to talking finances, his being a huge UFC fan, and the rift between Dana White and Strikeforce counterpart Scott Coker. Listen to hear that and much, much more.

Bellator Bellas Mercedes Terrell and Monica Arteaga got things warmed up, revealing the company’s bias toward brunettes and the details about how their got their position within the organization. Listen as they talk about the “real” play-by-play they produce during the weekly events!
