MMADieHards.com has learned that longtime WEC cage announcer Joe Martinez will make his return to the blue cage at WEC 52 in Las Vegas on Nov. 11 at the Palms Casino.
News of Martinez’s return came out on Are You Ready Radio on the MMADieHards Radio Network, which Martinez co-hosts with Joe Rizzo. Guest Todd Harris, the WEC play-by-play announcer, effectively “outed” that Martinez would be back for the event, and MMA DieHards later confirmed it with the promotion.
“We’ll see you at WEC 52, I believe, November?” Harris said on the show.
“Uh, yeah,” Martinez responded. “I guess the cat’s out of the bag.”
Martinez explained further after Harris was off the air.
“I’ve been sitting on it for a while, by request,” Martinez said. “And, well, what can I say? … I’m going to be doing the WEC show Nov. 11 show in Vegas at the Palms. I’ll be the cage announcer. That’s about it.
“As far as I know, nothing further. Just that night, and we’ll see. I can’t give you any more than that. I’m just very excited and looking forward to it.”
Martinez and the WEC parted ways earlier this year after nearly 3 1/2 years. Martinez’s duties were taken over by veteran UFC announcer Bruce Buffer. With Buffer’s commitment to UFC 122 on Nov. 13, the promotion asked Martinez to return for a one-time commitment (for now).
Harris expressed his excitement toward Martinez’s return.
“It’s not the same without you,” proclaimed Harris. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a great time at the Palms.”
